CCTS readiness: what energy-intensive plants should prepare now

India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme extends the compliance conversation from energy intensity to emissions intensity. The data groundwork is the same.

From energy intensity to emissions intensity

The Carbon Credit Trading Scheme moves obligated entities toward greenhouse gas emission intensity targets, building on the measurement discipline that PAT established for specific energy consumption.

The practical implication is that emissions data now needs the same defensibility that energy data required — activity data, emission factors, boundaries and verification trails.

What to put in place

  • A GHG inventory covering Scope 1 and Scope 2 with documented boundaries
  • Activity data traceable to meters, weighbridges and fuel receipts
  • An energy and carbon baseline consistent with the compliance basis
  • A decarbonisation roadmap with measures ranked by cost per tonne abated
  • Internal verification readiness ahead of external assessment
