GreenCo Rating: what the framework actually measures

The CII GreenCo Rating System scores a facility across ten environmental parameters. A look at the weightings and what a facilitator does.

A parameter-weighted assessment

GreenCo is the CII rating system that evaluates a company’s environmental performance across ten parameters, each carrying a defined point weighting, with rating levels from Certified through to World Class.

Because points are earned against evidence, the work of facilitation is largely measurement and data discipline: energy, water, renewable share, GHG emissions, waste, material recycling, supply chain, product life cycle, innovation and green infrastructure.

What the facilitator contributes

  • Gap assessment against the parameter set and point weightings
  • Data systems for energy, water, waste and emissions
  • Improvement projects prioritised by point gain and business return
  • Documentation and readiness for the rating assessment

Context

As of February 2023, over 900 companies in India were working on GreenCo ratings and 479 units had been rated. The first 350 rated companies reported a reduction of 3.03 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent and annual recurring savings of Rs. 3,379 crore. (Source: CII)
