Pumping systems: why the best efficiency point matters more than the pump curve

Most pumping energy is lost to throttling, oversizing and operation away from the best efficiency point. Measurement identifies which of the three you have.

The three losses

  • Oversizing — a pump selected for a duty the system never reaches
  • Throttling — head artificially added at a control valve to match flow
  • Drift — wear and system change moving operation away from best efficiency

What a performance assessment measures

  • Flow using a clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter, without breaking the line
  • Suction and discharge pressure to establish actual developed head
  • Electrical input power at the motor terminals
  • Computed pump and system efficiency against the manufacturer curve

Typical outcomes

Assessments commonly point to impeller trimming, correct re-sizing, variable speed operation where the load profile justifies it, or simply removing an unnecessary throttle. Each option should reach the client with an investment figure and a payback period attached.
